Singing Coaches

What To Look For In Singing Coaches

Choosing out of the many singing coaches that are available can certainly be a daunting task.  Unless you have a personal recommendation from someone, it is nearly impossible to be sure that they will live up to your expectations.  It is always recommended before hiring one to utilize a program such as Singorama” so you at least go into your lessons with some basic knowledge.  With how advanced downloadable singing programs are, you may find that you don’t even need to hire a coach.

Difference Between Singing Coaches and Teachers

A teacher of this type instructs anyone to sing, regardless of age or talent.  A coach on the other hand, traditionally works with individuals who have had some experience or at least some solid natural talent to prepare them for a performance or refine their skills.

While teachers help you to learn vocal techniques such as breathing, posture, ear-training and reading music, singing coaches can tell you if something is out of tune.  They typically do this by accompanying you on a piano, making corrections as needed.  Whether you work with a coach or not, you should also utilize a program such as Pitch Perfecter so you can work on your sound even when you are home alone. It is not a requirement that a coach actually be a singer however they have to have sharp hearing and full knowledge of any literature brought to them by their students.

Choosing a Coach

It is important to know exactly what you want when you start interviewing potential singing coaches.  Have goals written down of exactly what you are hoping to accomplish vocally.  When you interview them, be sure to ask them questions regarding voice mechanics, musical performance and style, sight-singing, ear-training and music theory.

If you really have the desire to be an exceptional singer, you have to find the best coach that will help you fulfill your goals.  Do not be afraid to ask for references as well.  Also, most singing coaches will be able to recommend a downloadable vocal program that you should use to work on your singing between lessons.  Not having one of these important tools can certainly slow down your development substantially.  Easy Singing Lessons is an excellent program that many vocal tutors recommend.

Your coach should have experience performing a variety of different music styles however, it is not necessary that they still do so.  Many of them have received such an elite status through many years of experience are not required to do so anymore to retain their recognition.  If they choose to only coach and not perform, that is completely acceptable.

It is recommended that they have a degree in music education.  This ensures that they have studied numerous musical styles, vocal production, conducting, advanced music theory and educational philosophies.  Do not be afraid to ask questions about these topics and do not be scared to take your time and interview a few coaches before making your decision.

Why Coaches Make You Sing Classical Music

It is inevitable that your coach will expect you to sing classical music, whether you enjoy it or not.  This is because singing coaches understand the importance of studying every genre of music.  Classical music requires your voice to use its full capabilities.  Other varieties of music may be more your style but they are not necessarily helpful to achieve optimal vocal  production.

If your training time is limited before a production, discuss your lesson plans with your coach to be sure that you are focusing on exactly what you need to at that particular time.  While you do need to respect the theory behind your coach’s teaching, it is ultimately your money, time and education.
