Your coach should have experience performing a variety of different music styles however, it is not necessary that they still do so. Many of them have received such an elite status through many years of experience are not required to do so anymore to retain their recognition. It is inevitable that your coach will expect you to sing classical music, whether you enjoy it or not. This is because singing coaches understand the importance of studying every genre of music. Classical music requires your voice to use its full capabilities. Other varieties of music may be more your style but they are not necessarily helpful to achieve optimal vocal production.
If your training time is limited before a production, discuss your lesson plans with your coach to be sure that you are focusing on exactly what you need to at that particular time. While you do need to respect the theory behind your coach’s teaching, it is ultimately your money, time and education.
